Sharing Our Hobby

As I sit thinking about what to write to the Membership of PAQA, a few things come to mind. First, what a wonderful group this is. Thank you for the opportunity to lead such an amazing group! Second, I think about how getting involved has helped my circle of quilting friends grow and inspire me to do more! Quilters are a wonderfully giving, loyal group of friends who encourage each other, challenge each other and know how to have fun! Third, I think about our purpose – to educate quilters.

It is a challenge to keep our hobby going. How can we as an organization share our goal to educate quilters and share this with younger generations? How can we inspire them to create quilts and keep this wonderful -- and addicting -- hobby alive for many years to come? How can we share the joy we feel when we create something new? When we touch a piece of fabric? When we discover a new designer? How can we explain the passion of having a stash of wonderful fabrics, a pile of UFO’s, multiple machines and every tool imaginable?

I challenge each one of you to reach out and invite a younger quilter to a meeting so that they can hear a speaker, see their creations and then watch as we share our Show and Tell accomplishment?
Without giving the opportunity to participate in the experience of quilting, how can they be inspired to even sit down at a sewing machine! We have so much to share, let’s make it our goal to start sharing!

Do you know of a group that would let us share our love of quilting? Would you be willing to participate in an event to help a younger person create their first project? If so, let a Board member know! We have a great year planned and I hope we will all be inspired! I am always available if you have an idea or even a concern. We want our members to enjoy their experience as a PAQA member!

The other day my husband brought me a sock with a hole in it and asked me to darn it. My reaction? “I don’t darn socks! Throw it away and buy some new ones. Interesting Quilting Trivia

I ran across some interesting quilting trivia recently, so thought I’d share some of it. No wonder we’re all intrigued and in love with this great craft! Evidence of quilting has been found as early as 3400 BC It was a quilted garment. The oldest bed quilt was found in Sicily and dates back to the 1400s. The oldest surviving American quilt is from the early 18th century, though it’s gener ally felt that the skill of quilting was brought by settlers from Europe even earlier. Perhaps they did not bring actual quilts with them or they did not survive the journey, but they did bring their skills. Most early quilts were made from “second use” fabric such as old clothes or feed sacks. Quilting moved across the country with the settlers as they moved west. Quilts were not only used on beds, but were used as covers for doors and over windows in newly built homes. Happy 4th of July

Can you believe 2019 is half over? All you have to do is take one step outside to know it’s summertime in Phoenix and that means it’s HOT! Not exactly snuggle-under-a-quilt weather, but on the other hand it’s GREAT weather to stay inside and MAKE a quilt. Turn down the AC, turn on the ceiling fan, pour a tall glass of lemonade, turn on some music, and let your mind focus on making something awesome. Sounds perfect to me. And July is the time to celebrate our freedoms. Though one could argue that our country and its leaders seem to be in a bit of turmoil these days, we can still count our blessings here in America. We can happily celebrate the freedom to live where we want, worship where we choose, marry who we love, come and go as we please, take a walk and feel safe, buy just about anything we need (or want), etc. etc. I volunteer at a hospital once a week with a 19-year-old young lady who came here from Iraq a few years ago.
