A challenge to all members

This month I’m making a challenge for everyone who is part of PAQA. And no . . . it has nothing to do with quilting. I’m not asking you to clean up your sewing room, sort out those messy closets and drawers, or even finish that eternal project that’s looming over you. This challenge is of a different kind.

But first, let me lay the groundwork. At the February meeting, we were excited to welcome four new members and eight visitors. It’s always something to celebrate as we watch our numbers grow. And that’s where the challenge comes in. Those people need to know we’re a friendly group and that they are indeed welcome.

So the challenge is simple. Each time you come to a PAQA event, reach out and talk to someone you don’t know. If you see someone without a name tag, that could be a clue that they’re visiting for the first time, so extend a welcoming smile and start a conversation. Simple statements or questions such as: “I don’t believe we’ve met.” “Have you been coming for awhile or is this your fist visit?” “What brought you here?” “What kind of quilting do you like to do?” Look around and take a seat next to someone who seems to be alone. Leave your comfort zone for a bit and practice genuine friendliness.

Entering a new group for the first time can be daunting for some people, and whether or not they come back a second time can depend on how they were made to feel. Being ignored can be hurtful. Being acknowledged can be uplifting.

So reach out. Make a new friend. We know we all share a love of quilting or we wouldn’t be here, so there’s already some common ground. Take up my challenge and use that time before the meeting, during break time, or even in the parking lot to reach out to new-found quilting buddies. Your world and theirs will be better for it.

Meanwhile, Happy Quilting!
